But even if you look at the Silicon Valley:only one out of every ten companies will continue to be a one billion dollar company, only one out of ten.And then, two out of ten will do well, they will sell their company and they will do well. They will make some good money.Seven out of ten will almost be a wash, meaning they wi ll either not make money, at least return the money back to the investors or they will shut down.So, what would make you take such a risk other than you being truly in love with the idea that you are trying to implement? So thats why I say the biggest thing that you need to be sure of is that idea that you have, that thing youre going to be working on is something that you feel very, very passionate about. Otherwise, you will run out of energy and be unable to continue to do it. So thats number one, very key advice.#2 KEY ADVICENumber two key advice, I would say as well the key reason why Silicon Valley has been successful in this, is hire great people. Make sureâ€" especially in the very early days, that youre hiring the best of the best. And the corollary to that is to fire people quickly, as well. Which people from sometimes outside the Bay Area even in the U.S., not even mentioning Europe, find that very hard. But thats very, very important because you dont have time to make mis takes. When youre in a start-up in a high growth business, competition will come after you just like this. As soon as they smell money, five other companies will start doing the same thing. So you dont have time to be slow and if you hired bad people, these bad people will make you slow. And bad people doesnt mean theyre not intelligent or not smart, sometimes theyre just not good culture fit. Like, they dont fit with the culture of how the rest of the team operates. They could be great people justâ€" theyre not a good culture fit. Once you recognize something like that, then you need to let them go. And you do it in a good way, and you take good care of them. You give them a severance package but you do it because its very important, otherwise it will slow you down.#3 KEY ADVICEThe number three, and you frequently hear this lesson from other companies in the Silicon Valley, is dont be afraid to make mistakes. Dont be afraid to make mistakes. What does that mean is that you cannot b e innovative, you cannot build a new solution without trying to do that in a new way. And by definition, if you try to do something in a new way, you will end up making a mistake. Whats important is, once you make that mistake, you recognize that mistake and you correct for it very quickly. So thats whats important. So thats very important.#4 KEY ADVICEYou have to have a continuous sense of urgency. Even at the beginning, when you dont have competition, nobody else is coming after you, you still have to have a sense of urgency. Like, ‘I have to move quick, I have to get things done, I have to get customers mind my product, I have to start making money’. Like, you always have to have that sense of urgency and it has to come from inside of you. You cannot wait for the investors to tell you because theyre not going to tell you. Theyre too busy themselves. It has to come from inside you that, ‘I have to move quickly to get things done. I cant just wait until business comes to me, Im going to go hunt my business down, Im going to find the right product and get it done’. So a sense of urgency is very important. The corollary to that as well is dont spend a year planning what youre going to do, ‘Oh, Im going to do this, Im going to do that, and then this is my business plan looks like’. No, no, at the beginning, you dont have time for that. At the beginning, you start doing. You start doing and as you are doing, you build your plan and you change your plan. As opposed to build a pl an for a year, like what big companies do and then go execute that plan. Next, and I have three more.#5 KEY ADVICESo next, and this is one of the most important advice for engineers because they fall in a trap but the next one is listen to your customers. Listen to your customers. So sometimes engineers specifically, they get obsessed with building products because they are cool, because they have a new technology idea that was really smart, as opposed to this is something that solves a real customer problem. So I always like to stress that if this is not solving a customer problem, it doesnt matter if its the coolest thing in the world. Its not going to make a difference. And I frequently use a nice quote form Henry Ford. Henry Ford is the guy that invented the car. Because some of my engineers would tell me, so that means that I cannot be innovative. I cannot go innovate. I have to always listen to the customers. And no, actually, thats my point, because Henry Ford, if you look at what he said, he said, ‘When I asked my customers what do you want? They said we want faster horses’. And you cannot get faster horses. So what the engineer do, the engineer goes to customers and ask them what is your problem? And then they would say, ‘Our problem is we want to get from point A to point B really quickly’. And then now, you as an engineer, will go and innovate, and you build the car. So the innovation is in the solution, not in the problem. You dont innovate on the problem. The problem has to come from the customer, thats the key point.#6 KEY ADVICEAnd then one of the most important advice also is, you have to have the faith in success. Meaning that you have to believe youre going to succeed. Even me, I just said earlier, only one out of ten will succeed. But youre chances of success will be much higher if inside of your company you have this very positive energy of; I am going to succeed, I am going to make this happen. You need to have that, and that energ y will spread from you to your team and you will have this culture of success going on in your company, where youre planning and all the actions youre taking are being taken with the assumption that we will succeed. Fact-finding includes identifying the injustices, and telling the difference between a just and an unjust law and its alignment with moral laws. The negotiation stage is essential because its peaceful goals for political change can sometimes only be achieved after action. Meaning that negotiations must be two-sided, with both sides having equa l power and good faith. The self-purification step entails questioning a persons own moral strength and lastly, nonviolent direct action fosters tension, which in turn fosters the need for negotiation. With these steps being implemented, people were able to enforce nonviolence to promote their organizations and campaigns, like sit-ins. Following these steps allows for a successful and effective nonviolent social change. I also believe that nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people, taking a step forward for a call to action. Nonviolence in the end defeats injustices meaning the entire world learns to embrace justices. I believe sit-ins were effective because in some way they followed these four steps. Sit-ins evolved around an unjust law, where minorities were enslaved by the majorities (segregation), it included a respectable negotiation of peaceful sitting, it was self-purified because the ones who started the movement were able to mobilize people to participate as the movement later progressed, and lastly there was tension/direct action among the white supremacists. Because of how MLK viewed nonviolence, he believed nonviolent resistance is the most powerful weapon that oppressed people can use in breaking loose from the bondage of oppression (King Interview 2:50). This being said, the oppressed people were those who had no freedom. Through the nonviolent protests mentioned in his interview, MLK strongly believed that nonviolence was the strongest approach to regime from the system. Like MLK, I think nonviolent resistance is the most powerful because nonviolent resistance presents fewer obstacles to moral and physical involvement and commitment. Successful nonviolent resistance is more durable and overall peaceful.Another key symbolic protest that can be effective includes boycotts. Martin Luther King Jrs activism, motivated by religious convictions and his commitment to equality and justice, led to protests like the Montgomery bus boycott. In my opinion, MLKs activism could be morally seen as civil disobedience because he used principles of nonviolent resistance to take action on his beliefs. Although boycotts now are different than they were during the civil rig hts movement, I believe those boycotts were effective because many people we able to participate, knowing they would create an effect on others. The economic Montgomery bus boycott was effective in making bus companies realize they were losing more than half of their income without African Americans being able to use buses as transportation. This protest was successful because it ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses was unconstitutional. Although I withstand my position of following non-violent movements like sit-ins, I know there are times in which people dissent with violence. Malcolm X was a black influential leader, who wanted to achieve true independence and equality of black power. He was apart of the Nation of Islam, and formed the Organization of Afro-American Unity as discussed in his speech at the Founding Rally of the Organization of Afro-American Unity. Malcolm Xs organization was divided into categories including establishment, self-defense, education and social. In Malcolm Xs category of social in the Afro-American Unity Organization, he stated that, Anytime we know that an unjust condition exists and it is illegal and unjust, we will strike it by any means necessary (Malcolm X 162). Malcolm X felt that black citizens were entitled to secure their rights by any means nec essary including the use of violence. Although MLK and Cohen implemented nonviolence resistance, by any means necessary can be used with non-violent protests because people can have a successful outcome by any means necessary if and only if it includes non-violent strategies. I feel that civilians are entitled to take responsibility for their actions, whether that includes performing an act of violence or non-violence. Malcolm X does in fact consider non-violent methods because they are the only successful methods. He believes that people should be nonviolent, with those who are nonviolent with them (Malcolm X 160). Like Malcolm, I can somewhat agree with what he is saying. I think people should always try to perform acts with non-violence to keep problems as peaceful as possible, but I do understand Malcolms point of view in people being violent for the wrong purposes. If someone is being violent towards you, you are going to be violent towards him or her also because you are going to want to defend yourself. Although t his can be true, nonviolent resistance will always present fewer obstacles, making non-violent methods easier to use, to moral and physical involvement. With higher participation, more opportunities are created for innovation and civil disruption. In conclusion, non-violent forms of protests are the most successful and have the greater outcome. Civil disobedience involves the refusal to obey laws that are immoral or unjust. With civil disobedience being justified through non-violent forms of protests, it can be the best method used to create a successful protest. Nonviolence is the best strategy because it includes being peaceful and un-destructive, contributing to its effectiveness. As the world progresses, of course there will continue to be protests, but to be honest the best method applied should be non-violence because it is the most effective. There were no specific research questions in this study but one could assume that the research questions were: Will patients who are newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes show improvement in glycemic control because of their self-management? Also, will immediate feedback insure compliance with medication requirements and determine patient attitude toward their disease? These questions can be inferred by the two-fold purpose of the study(O’Kane et al., 2008). The basic concept is that the researchers wanted to understand how self-monitoring effected the attitudes and the self-monitoring of newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes. The phenomena studied was type 2 diabetes in adult males, aged 70 or older (O’Kane et al., 2008). This was a quantitative study that used a â€Å"a randomised controlled trial† (O’Kane et al., 2008, para. 11) that used two groups. One group was asked to self-monitor their glucose concentrations regularly, ( the intervention group) and the second group was asked not to monitor their glucose concentrations (the control group). The patients were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and they were recruited from several diabetes services in several cities in Ireland. The age of the patients was 70 and above, and the study was done between 2002 and 2005. Some doctors referred specific participants.
